City of Koronadal, South Cotabato – The National Statistics Month is celebrated every month of October every year pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 signed by then President Corazon C. Aquino on September 20, 1990.

The NSM generally aims to (a) to promote, enhance and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society; and (b) to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.

This year’s celebration will mark the 29th NSM celebration in the country, almost three (3) decades of celebrating the key instrument in tracking the country’s economic progress. It will focus on tourism as one of the major drivers of the economy which, as per record from the Philippine Tourism Satellites Accounts (PTSA) compiled by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), has contributed 12.2 percent to the Philippine economy and was able to employ 5.3 million in 2017.  Its contribution to the national economy was 24.2 percent higher than that of the previous year.

Thus, this nationwide month-long event will be hosted by the Department of Tourism (DOT) with the theme “Exploring Philippine Wonders in Numbers:  Statistics Towards Sustainable Tourism Development.” The theme reflects the relevance of statistics in achieving a sustainable and progressive tourism growth for our country and emphasizes the need for statistics to identify potential tourism havens and tourist areas which require interventions for development. Region XII is expected to generate more benefits because it hosts a number of must-visit scenic places for the tourists and will add value to its brand – the 12th Paradise of the Philippines.

PSA XII has lined-up several activities in the region for this month-long celebration with the participation of various government agencies and offices, private sectors and other local stakeholders. A motorcade on October 02, 2018 will signal the commencement of this significant event. Likewise, the kick-off Ceremony and Infographics display will take place at FB Hotel, Koronadal City after the said motorcade.

Other activities lined-up are as follows: (a) Info graphics training for RSC XII members (October 5, 2018); (b) Data Dissemination and Research Utilization Forum (sponsored by NEDA XII) (October 19, 2018); (c) Tree planting activity (October 29, 2018); and (d) Closing Program sponsored by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) (October 30, 2018).

Regional Development Council (RDC) XII passed Resolution No. 136, Series of 2018, during its 63rd Regular Meeting on September 20, 2018 in Koronadal City, enjoining all agencies of the national government, local government units, academic institutions, state universities and colleges, and the private sector to actively participate in and support the celebration the 29th NSM.  (Myra L.
