City of Koronadal, South Cotabato – The members of Regional Development Council (RDC) XII were briefed about the recent peace and security situation of the region during its 63rd Regular Meeting on September 20, 2018 at the SOCCSKSARGEN Hall, NEDA XII Building, Prime Regional Government Center, Koronadal City. The briefing was done by BGen. Roberto T. Ancan, Commander of the 1002nd (Bagwis) Brigade of the Philippine Army based at Malandag, Malungon, Sarangani Province, and Cpt. Ryan Mar P. Hubo of the Civil Military Operations Division, 6th Infantry Division based in Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao.
The update on the peace and security situation is highly significant considering the recent bombings experienced by the region, specifically in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat; Midsayap, Cotabato Province, and Brgy. Apopong, General Santos City.
The Council concurred with the recommendation of the two (2) officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to enjoin the community to be vigilant and pro-active in maintaining peace and order in their respective areas and by considering it as a priority in their day-to-day activities.
The Council also recommended for law enforcers to identify the patterns of radicalism so that appropriate measures can be laid down in advance. While the setting up of check points is one strategy in addressing extremism, the Council reminded the AFP to implement strategies that would keep the flow of traffic in order to avoid delays in the delivery of goods and services.
The AFP officers, nonetheless, asked for the indulgence of the public to be patient and better understand the need for check points because it is primarily for the public safety. BGen. Ancan advised the commuting public to be more punctual in their trips to avoid delays in their appointments.
Meantime, MEDAFC suggested to strengthen the Oplan Mapayapa Program of the Philippine National Police which was assessed as a good practice in apprehending lawless elements that intend to threaten the community.
After his presentation, BGen. Ancan proposed that AFP be considered as a special non-voting member in RDC XII as peace and security is one of the crucial concerns that should be given utmost attention. The RDC XII Chair instructed the Macro-economy, Development Administration and Finance Committee (MEDAFC) XII to discuss the said request in the Committee’s next meeting and to make the appropriate recommendation for the Council’s consideration. The AFP was requested to decide on its representation to the Council as there are two (2) Infantry Divisions operating the region, namely: the 6th ID and the 10th ID represented by its 1002nd IB.
Finally, RDC XII expressed support to help the AFP in its peace and security efforts in the region (Sandra J. Alido, NEDA XII-DRD).
