City of Koronadal, South Cotabato – In the celebration of World Environment Day and Environment Month, the Environment Management Bureau XII headed by Regional Director Ma. Socorro C. Lanto, zeroed in on the call to “Beat Plastic Pollution” through the program Kapihan sa PIA XII at City Mall, Koronadal City on June 5, 2018.
RD Lanto shared SOCCSKSARGEN Region’s initiatives to curtail plastic pollution, such as the “No to Plastic Ordinance” passed by the City Government Koronadal. Malls and business establishments in the city were discouraged on the use of plastic bags, while consumers are encouraged to use or bring with them recyclable/reusable bags when shopping or doing marketing.
Resort owners in Sarangani Bay were oriented on the various environmental policies and easement concerns, especially on the proper disposable of shampoo plastic sachets, plastic or Styrofoam food containers, plastic straws, and among others. The sewage systems of resorts in the said bay are also regularly monitored by EMB XII in order to avoid the Boracay problem on improper waste water disposable.
Yearly clean up drive on the major water bodies in the region is also conducted by EMB XII in partnership with local leaders and private sectors. The quality of water and air in SOCCSKSARGEN Region remains at an acceptable level, though there are several traces of fecal coliforms and grease found in some of the beaches in the region.
The event calls for everyone to be conscious in protecting the environment, particularly in beating plastic pollution. If you cannot reuse it, refuse it; buy in bulk; organize clean up activity; bring your own container or reusable shopping bags; and be informed and spread awareness against plastic pollution, RD Lanto emphasized.
