City of Koronadal, South Cotabato – The best doctor on kidney disease is early detection, said Dr. Bai Tarjata Usman-Macadato, an Internist and Diabetes Educator from Cotabato Doctor’s Clinic during the Kapihan sa PIA on June 6, 2018 at Cinco Niñas Restaurant, Koronadal City.   Undergoing laboratory tests like urinalysis and fasting blood sugar (FBS), provide the needed information to properly manage renal disease.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle by having regular exercise, a balanced-diet following the Pinggang Pinoy concept, and getting regular medical check-up, would help control the medical risk factors associated with kidney disease.

Dr. Macadato added that untreated diabetes can lead to serious medical problems like heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and limb amputation.  Heredity is one of the risk factors of diabetes.

Ms. Ma. Estela E. Ilagan of DOH XII also shared that glomerulonephritis and renal disease are consistently at the top 5 leading causes of mortality in the region.   Also, the trend of dialyse patients in the region is increasing.

The conduct of the Kapihan sa PIA is part of the observance of the 2018 Kidney Month celebration with the theme: “Kalusugan ng Bato’y Makakamtan sa Pag-aalaga ng Kalikasan.” Information Officers from various regional line agencies and media practitioners in Koronadal City attended this activity.

The campaign on the prevention of kidney disease is supportive of the AmBisyon Natin 2040 and the Philippine/Regional Development Plan, 2017-2022 of accelerating human development by promoting good health toward a long and healthy life. (Evie Arabis Cabulanan, NEDA XII-DRD)
